Another Homophobic Nominee

Yet again, Donald Trump has nominated a reprehensible homophobe and far-right religious zealot to fill a vacancy, this time an open federal judgeship in Texas (details here).

The nominee is Jeff Mateer, currently an assistant state attorney general. Mateer has claimed in past speeches that same-sex marriage would lead to polygamy and bestiality, that transgender children are a sign of "Satan's plan," and that gay conversion therapy should be legalized.

Mateer has also given speeches at a conference organized by a controversial minister who said the punishment for homosexuality should be death. Further, he has called same-sex couples "disgusting."

What makes this all the more disturbing is the fact that judges are appointed for life. Mateer is only in his early forties and could serve on the bench for three decades or more, where he will continue his hostility toward LGBT Americans for many years.

It's worth remembering that, as a candidate, Trump promised the LGBT community that "I will fight for you" and said in a speech (source here) "ask yourself, who is really the friend of women and the LGBT community, Donald Trump with his actions, or Hillary Clinton with her words?"

Of course, that was all a lie. It's quite clear now that Trump is the most anti-LGBT President in the last fifty years, more so than Ronald Reagan or George W. Bush (source here).

Any LGBT Americans who still supports Trump must ask themselves why they are behind someone so determined to shove them back in the closet and deny them their rights. Stop listening to Trump'a empty rhetoric and look what he's doing to LGBT Americans like you.
